What Should You Wear to an Acupuncture Appointment?
Nothing complicated — just a few practical details that make treatment more comfortable and efficient.
Loose, Comfortable Clothing
Acupuncture points are often located on the arms, legs, back, and abdomen, so clothing that can be easily rolled up or moved aside — rather than tight jeans or fitted layers — makes treatment smoother. Athletic wear, loose trousers, and short- or three-quarter-sleeve tops all work well.
Access to Arms and Legs
- Sleeves that roll up comfortably above the elbow
- Pant legs that roll up past the knee, or shorts
- Avoid tight compression wear over areas likely to be treated
Changing if Needed
If your treatment area needs more coverage removed than your clothing allows, a gown or draping will be provided. There's no need to plan around this in advance — just mention it if you're unsure what a session for your specific concern will involve.
Meals and Hydration
Eating a light meal before your appointment is generally a reasonable approach — arriving very hungry or right after a large meal can both be less comfortable during a session that involves lying still. Staying reasonably hydrated beforehand is a sensible habit as well.
Fragrances
Treatment rooms are typically quiet and close, and appointments often run back to back throughout the day, so it's considerate to keep perfume, cologne, or strongly scented lotions light.
What to Bring
- A list of current medications, if you're not sure you'll remember them
- Any relevant medical documentation for your concern
- Insurance information, if you plan to submit a receipt for reimbursement
